|Curtis Slater – Executive Director
I am the Executive Director of PREP and have been working in the nonprofit and education sectors for over 13 years. I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of those who face barriers, and I have spent my entire career focused on making a significant social impact for those who need it most. My wife Karyn and I have 4 young boys who keep us very busy in our spare time. Our oldest, Jake, has Down syndrome and has been attending PREP since he was just a baby. PREP has been an incredible part of our journey, and I am excited that I get to lead such an amazing organization to serve others in the same way our family has been served.
|Mark Adolf – President
I am a business entrepreneur and a proud family man raising two young sons. While I don’t have a direct connection to Down syndrome, I am inspired to volunteer for PREP because I believe everyday people can work together to make their community a better place to be for all of us.
When I am not working or volunteering, I am busy enjoying the great outdoors with my family – a source of great inspiration to me. A sense of humour is also very important to me – when I was in Grade 12, I enrolled in Clown School, and still have a couple of tricks up my sleeve!
|Belinda Mendes – Vice President
I have a MA in Counselling Psychology and work as a Family Counsellor on the Mental Health Unit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. I am also a mom to two wonderful children. When our first child was born with Down syndrome, I felt like I had another calling of sorts – to be more involved in his world. He is my inspiration, one of my main reasons for being on the PREP Board of Directors.
When I get some free time, you’ll find me gardening, reading, journaling or spending time with friends and family. I am also the first one to hit the dance floor as I love to dance!
|Jean Lemire – Treasurer
I am an accountant and the proud dad of an inquisitive preschooler. Our little guy has Down syndrome, and PREP has been a huge part of his life since he was 6 months old.
I am inspired by ongoing learning opportunities and building long-term relationships – both of which are integral to being on the Board.
Amidst the busy tempo of life, our family makes time for fun. You’ll find us outdoors – slo pitch and camping in the summer, and snowboarding in the winter.
|Jackie Onyszko – Secretary
In my spare time I like to spend it with my family: my husband, Matt, and my daughter, Payton. I like to be active and work out but also love to sit idle and read.
I am inspired by people who have to work hard to accomplish something. I have an even greater appreciation for showing perseverance, tenacity, and strength to reach goals now that I have a daughter with Down Syndrome. You celebrate the small things so much more and truly value those who are willing to put in the extra effort.
I am volunteering at PREP because the success of this school is important for helping support our children obtain the resources and skills for a successful life. I became a member of PREP in 2015 after my daughter was born with Down Syndrome. We have loved our time and the people and I wanted to give some of my time to help support the school.
|Jasper Buys – Director
I am a consultant with a background in Psychology, Organizational Psychology and Program Evaluation. My wife and I moved to Calgary from Cape Town South Africa (via Athabasca, AB) and have made it our home, along with our daughter and Labrador.I’ve been wanting to get involved with a program like PREP for many years, inspired by my middle brother and how my parents had to seek out the support to give him the best opportunities to develop and thrive. I serve on this board gladly and in honour of my brother, stepfather, and late mother.I am an avid chorister and downhill skier, and have made it my unofficial job to introduce friends and strangers to some of South Africa’s amazing wines.
|Ben Leslie – Director
I work as a key account manager for a wine company here in Calgary and I’m also proud dad to two beautiful girls. My 6-year old has Down Syndrome and started attending Prep when she was 8 months old. Prep has been such a positive influence in our lives and I wanted to give back by volunteering my time on the board of directors. In my spare time I like to golf, play hockey and, of course, get tackled by daughters.
|Adrienne Murray – Director
I am taking a break from my oil and gas career to stay at home with my two wonderful children and a very energetic Labrador puppy. I am inspired everyday by both my children – my son, who has Down syndrome, because he has an incredible joy for life despite the extra challenges he faces, and my older daughter because she has loved and supported her brother unconditionally since the day he was born.
I am volunteering on the BOD because PREP has had such a positive impact on my son’s life. I see it as a great way to combine my business expertise with my passion for the future of PREP, and the inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome.
|Miranda Specht – Director
I am a mom of two wonderful children, and currently hold two volunteer positions – one of which is with PREP. I choose to sit on the PREP Board of Directors because I believe so strongly in inclusion and am inspired by people overcoming adversity with a positive attitude. I hope that my involvement will help make a difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families.
I believe that a hero is someone who steps in to help without looking for recognition.
In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family – preferably in Arizona or Disneyland!
|Keith Peterson – Director
My wife and I are the proud parents of two amazing boys. My youngest son has Down syndrome and he benefited from going through the early learning and early childhood services programs at PREP.I am a Human Resources professional who has spent the last twenty years working in leadership roles in large, unionized employers. I have recently started my own consulting company providing Human Resources support to employers.PREP is at a significant time in its history and I’m excited to be able to contribute to shaping the future by serving on the board.
